IPv6: Bangladesh is still stuck in 3 percent

The latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP) is IPv6. It originated in 1998 with the expected benefit of identifying each device used on the network, but in 2017 it began to be used worldwide as a universal protocol. In such a situation, at the 11th conference of Biding (Bangladesh Network Operators Group), member of the board of trustees of the organization, Sumon Ahmed Sabir highlighted the pathetic situation of IPv6 in Bangladesh. At the 'Internet Operational Technology' workshop held at Long Beach Hotel in Cox's Bazar on January 10, 2020, he said, 'We are in a very bad situation with IPV (Internet Protocol Version)-6. The usage rate of IPv6 in Bangladesh is only 0.1 percent. In India this rate is 60 percent. We want to take this rate to 20 percent in the next 6 months. However, even after one and a half years of that announcement, he could not express his satisfaction with IPv6. He said that till now the usage rate of IPv6 in the country is below 3 percent. However, Suman Ahmed Sabir is hopeful that the work will progress quickly after the basic work is completed. In such a situation, a day-long workshop was held at the initiative of the Local Broadband Network Owners Association (LBNOA), Bangladesh, in addition to increasing the efficiency and capacity of IPv6 deployment in the network of last mile broadband service providers and implementing the instructions of BTRC. Mr. Fouad Muhammad Sharfuddin, President of Local Broadband Network Owners Association (LBNOA), Bangladesh presided over the workshop and the President of Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) Md. Imdadul Haque was present as the chief guest. While speaking as the chief guest, the ISPAB President sought the help of APNIC to make the engineers technically proficient in IPv6. At the same time, he urged the participants of the workshop to take initiative to ensure that the routers and other networking devices they use are supported by IPv6, in addition to raising awareness about IPv6 at the end user level. Besides, Imdadul Haque called for strict surveillance by government institutions and organizations so that no device below IPv6 can be imported into the country. After the seminar, he told DigiBangla that, “ISPAB is working to increase awareness and know-how at all levels in the use of IPv6. Recently, I attended a workshop in Cox's Bazar. There will be a big event on this next October. The regulatory body BTRC has assured us of all-out support in this regard. We have already set up the lab. Now I hope this work will go ahead quickly.” Meanwhile, the main speaker at the workshop, Suman Ahmed Sabir, one of the members of the executive committee of APNIC (Asia Pacific Network Information Center) and CTO of Fiber@Home, shed light on why it is important to install IPv6 in the networks of last mile broadband service providers. At the same time, he also pointed out what kind of plan should be taken by the service providers before setting up IPv6. General Secretary of Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) Nazmul Karim Bhuiyan, President of Cyber Cafe Owners Association of Bangladesh (COAB) AM Kamal Uddin Ahmed Salim and President of Bangladesh Internet Samity (BIS) Anwar Hossain Anu were also present at the workshop as special guests. President of Local Broadband Network Owners Association (LBNOA), Bangladesh, Fuad Muhammad Sharfuddin said, last mile broadband service providers remove various types of confusion and confidence in installing new technologies while providing services. Local Broadband Network Owners Association (LBNOA) organizes various workshops every year to meet the challenges of new technologies in service delivery. In continuation of which, this year a day-long workshop has been organized to increase the confidence of the members on deploying IPv6 and remove various types of confusion. Owners and system engineers of last mile broadband service providers from across the country participated in a day-long workshop on Saturday (September 3) at a hotel in Gulshan in the capital. The event was sponsored by Fiber@Home Ltd., Apple Communication Ltd., Vergo Communication, BD Hub Ltd. Earth Telecommunications Pvt. Ltd. Maestro and e-com.
